Vic: Libs propose graffiti crackdown

Young graffiti artists would be banned from getting their driver's licence until the
age of 20 under a radical plan being considered by the Victorian Opposition.

Shadow Attorney General ROBERT DEAN says that under the plan young graffiti offenders
would have to wait two years longer than usual to obtain their licence.

He says it will add an element of peer pressure by making offenders the odd ones out.

Dr DEAN says the Victorian Liberal Party is developing a tough strategy to combat
graffiti which it will implement in conjunction with local councils if elected to government.

He says parents of graffiti offenders could also be fined and forced to attend compulsory
counselling sessions with their children in a bid to force them to take responsibility
for their offspring's actions.

Victorian lobby group Residents Against Graffiti Everywhere has applauded the proposal,
claiming similar strategies had been successful in the US.

Attorney General ROB HULLS was unavailable for comment.
