From feathers come fibers

Scientists in Maryland think they've come up with what to do withbillions of pounds of feathers left over after chickens areslaughtered: Recycle the feathers into disposable diapers andbuilding insulation.

Chicken feathers are made of a fibrous protein called keratin,the same fiber found in wool, hair and fingernails.

The fibers are ramrod straight, which makes them absorbentenough to be used as a raw material in a $1 billion-a-year industryproducing insulation materials, disposable diapers and air filtersfor trucks and factories, said Walter Schmidt, a research chemist atBeltsville Agricultural Research Center in Maryland."My sense is that once people realize …
