Fed: Saddam is trashing the UN, Downer says

SYDNEY, Feb 15 AAP - Peace protesters should not favour Iraqi President Saddam Husseintrashing the United Nations, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today.

Up to 150,000 demonstrators jammed into Melbourne's CBD last night to protest againsta US-led war on Iraq, kicking off a weekend of international action.

In response to the protest, Mr Downer said the issue was that the Iraqi President shouldrespect the United Nations as much as the demonstrators.

"I say that ultimately the United Nations' authority has to be upheld," Mr Downer toldABC radio AM.

"They (the protesters) talk passionately of support of the United Nations.

"In that case they should be in favour of the United Nations authority being upheld, not the United Nations authority being trashed by Saddam Hussein.

"I mean that is the issue."

Mr Downer said it was the military build-up against him that had led Saddam Husseinto go as far as he had in cooperating with the United Nations.
