SA: Coroner concerned over elderly deaths

A South Australian coroner says an 81-year-old Adelaide man who was killed in a car crash
in February last year, should not have been allowed to drive.

Handing down his finding into the death of HENRY EAST, coroner WILLIAM BOUCAUT said he was
surprised the pensioner had been declared fit to drive at his most recent medical examination.

He said Mr EAST suffered from sensory epilepsy and had a history of blackouts.

Mr EAST was killed when he suffered a blackout and drove his Holden station wagon into the
back of an earth moving machine at suburban Elizabeth Grove.

Mr BOUCAUT said the man's death -- and the fact that he'd been allowed to keep driving --
raised questions about the process of annual medical checks for people aged over 70.
