THE chief executive of Hibernia Atlantic that has been working onProject Kelvin has been recognized for promoting partnershipsbetween the USA and Ireland.
Bjarni Thorvardarson was presented with the Golden Bridges Awardby Derry City Council CEO Valerie Watts at a ceremony in Boston,Massachusetts.
The award was made at the Irish Echo 'Gateways to Tomorrow'Conference.
Hibernia Atlantic is the only diverse transAtlantic submarinetransport cable provider and has been involved in the operation --Proiject Kelvin -- to link the Hibernia North transAtlantic underseacable that runs from England to North America north of the NorthernIrish coast.
The link-up has cost Pounds 27m and the 22-mile cable recentlycame ashore at Portrush.
It will finish in a Telehouse in Derry from where high speedinternet access will be available across Northern Ireland and theRepublic.
This will be a big boost for global companies based on the islandas they will now be able to bypass the traditionally congestedroutes such as New York and London.
Local companies will now be able to benefit from a service withgreater capacity on a secure and reliable network.
