There is a war developing between SAN Parks and the local people at Noordhoek over the issue of free access to our mountains - in particular Chapman's Peak.
I have, from my house nearby, climbed the Peak for 20 years, and for six years I have used the new path on the south side, surveyed by an expert on hiking trails and now excellently engineered by a subcontractor to SAN Parks, who then instituted a permit system for the path.
Recently, in response to protests from Noordhoek residents, a senior official from SAN Parks confirmed that the permit system would be dropped. Nevertheless, SAN Parks are now, unbelievably, still insisting on a daily permit to climb …
