A group of Haitian activists backed by a coalition of labor and religious groups on September 20 organized a protest in New York City against sweatshop conditions alleged to exist in Haitian garment factories subcontracted by the Walt Disney Co. to produce garments for its stores:
* Mark Goodman, a spokesman for the Disney/Haiti Justice Campaign, said Disney employs several hundred workers in Port-au-Prince, the capital, making such items as Mickey Mouse T-Shirts and Pocahontas pajamas. "The average worker makes about US$2.50 a day, which is not enough to support a family when you have to pay at least US$7 a week in rent for just a hut. These are starvation wages"; …
